In this spotlight, we chat with Colorado stylist Allie Cox! We’re so excited to share Allie’s story and her work with you and talk all about her plans for this fall!
TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOURSELF, ALLIE!
Hi I’m Allie, hairstylist and owner of Colorland & Co. Hair Studio. I was born and raised in small town Wyoming and now reside in Colorado, just south of Denver. I graduated from the University of Wyoming in 2014 with a Bachelors Degree in Textile Merchandising and a minor in apparel design. I’m a lover of all things pink and country music, and my guilty pleasure is true crime.
WE WOULD LOVE TO KNOW WHAT’S BROUGHT YOU TO WHERE YOU ARE NOW! TELL US ABOUT YOUR CAREER AS A HAIRSTYLIST!
I honestly had no idea what I wanted to do with my life. My big girl job in retail was not fulfilling at all, and I knew I needed a change. I’d joked about being a hairstylist for years but never really had intentions of following through with it. One day at work though, I impulsively put in my two weeks’ notice. I started beauty school 10 days later.
I attended Paul Mitchell the School and afterward went to work at a local salon. After about a year and a half, I knew I wanted to spread my wings and try to venture out on my own. I opened a Sola Salon suite in February of 2019 and my little Colorland & Co. home was born. It’s been a wild ride with a lot of ups and downs, but I have learned so much and my biggest passion is passing that along to others! I specialize in blonding and dimensional color, and of course, my secret weapon: Harper Ellis Concealed Bead Extensions!
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO OTHER STYLISTS STARTING THEIR CAREERS?
Just do it! You can’t let the fear of striking out keep you from playing the game. Take the class, get the certification, try a technique out of your comfort zone! All good things come from just doing. Also, find what you love and give it your all. I realized my love was for long, dimensional hair and now I have a clientele built almost exclusively of that!
CAN YOU TELL US WHY YOU CHOOSE TO USE HAND-TIED EXTENSIONS AND WHY YOU USE HARPER ELLIS HAIR?
SOOOO MANY REASONS! I had a terrible experience with another method and brand I was certified in — I almost gave up on extensions entirely. One of my hair besties, Jessie Lessard of Jessica Marie Hair Co., was absolutely killing the game with hand-tied and Harper Ellis, so I had her give me my first set and I was hooked.
There were so many things I looked for in a hair extensions brand. I wanted something my clients could easily hide, something that would cause the absolute least amount of damage, and a company/method I felt supported their stylists. Harper Ellis not only checked those boxes, but so many more. The quality of hair speaks for itself, and not only that, the wefts are nearly undetectable and outrageously comfortable, and I have noticed no damage to myself or any client’s hair. It’s crazy — no one ever even believes that they are extensions! I have to dig through my hair to show my wefts just so people believe me.
I love that I feel so connected to the HE community. I mean . . . with what other company can you have direct contact with the CEO?! Harper Ellis hair extensions have been a game-changer for my income, my clients, and honestly, they are so fun to do!
TELL US SOMETHING YOU’RE REALLY LOOKING FORWARD TO THIS FALL!
Okay well the basic girl inside me says obviously Starbucks fall drinks and pumpkin patches, but also I feel like everyone is just a happier person in fall. The weather is so nice, everyone is excited for the holidays, and it always just feels like a fresh start. Oh, and let’s not forget everyone wants dimension and warmth brought back to their hair which makes my heart happy!
