In this spotlight, we chat with Portland-based Harper Ellis hairstylist and salon owner, Tyler Burles-Meusling. Today, we're learning all about Tyler’s career in styling as well as her experience with Harper Ellis hair.
HI TYLER! CAN YOU TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOURSELF?
I was born in a small town in Oregon (Coos Bay), but I grew up in San Diego.
I am obsessed with my dogs.
If I'm not working I prefer to be a couch potato binge-watching Netflix, surfing, or riding dirt bikes.
I can't cook to save my life so I eat a lot of cookies.
I am obsessed with Starbucks.
If I could be doing a different job/career I'd be a chemist.
I was a professional photographer before I went to hair school.
I'm very creative and like a to make my own way rather then follow/ copy others.
WE WOULD LOVE TO KNOW WHAT’S BROUGHT YOU TO WHERE YOU ARE NOW! WHAT CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT YOUR CAREER AS A HAIRSTYLIST?
My career as a hair stylist has all been self-taught.
I got to where I'm at today with so much hard work and determination. I'm a workaholic, normally working 12 hour days 6 days a week. I've literally worked 24 hours straight before . . . not leaving my chair. I've always been around people that told me I can't there's no way, I'm not good enough, and I won't succeed.
This really fueled me to work hard and prove them wrong. It's been 5 years since I graduated beauty school. I own my own salon, and I’m working towards my "ideal income.” I am now in the best space to give my clients the most amazing and relaxing service with the best results, and even better — I'm surrounded by the best people.
I'm truly so blessed and thankful to be where I'm at today. It hasn't been an easy road, but I appreciate where I'm going now so much more than I ever could have. I really just focus on what I want to do and do my best to not focus on what other people are doing around me.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO OTHER STYLISTS AS WE ENTER A NEW YEAR?
Set goals for yourself and try not to focus on others.
Push yourself to try something new!

I am obsessed with Harper Ellis hair. The color choices are amazing and the quality is unreal. Not having the custom color every single weft has changed the game for me. Plus, the longevity of the extensions for color lasts way longer, so that saves me time and saves my clients money!
