In this spotlight, we chat with Longview, Texas hairstylist Jenny McCurry! We’re so excited to share Jenny’s story and her work with you and talk all about her plans for this fall!
TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOURSELF, JENNY!
I’m a wife, mother to 2 awesome kiddos, and stylist/extensions specialist in Longview, Texas. I was born and raised here in East Texas and have never really called anywhere else home. I love being able to be close enough to the bigger cities to visit but come back to reality in the small town country vibe. My husband and I have been together for over 18 years and are currently in what feels like the busiest season of our lives juggling growing careers and active kids, but we are so blessed to do it together and call this crazy life ours!
WE WOULD LOVE TO KNOW WHAT’S BROUGHT YOU TO WHERE YOU ARE NOW! TELL US ABOUT YOUR CAREER AS A HAIRSTYLIST — HOW YOU STARTED, ALL THAT FUN STUFF!
I graduated Cosmetology school at the age of 17, the same time as graduating high school. I’ve always loved doing hair for fun but honestly wasn’t sure if I wanted to make a career out of it, so I figured it would at least be a great thing to fall back on if needed. After doing hair for a year or so while going to college, I knew it was something I would never want to give up. I have now been behind the chair for over 17 years. There is just no better feeling than the confidence that you can help instill in someone by making them feel great about their hair. The ability to mix the creativity with the relationships you build with your clients has always brought me so much joy. But, despite always having a strong love for my job, it actually wasn’t until the past few years that I connected with the right stylists to really uncover the full potential of making a thriving career out of my passion. My career has evolved so much over the past few years, and my excitement to see what the future holds just continues to grow.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO OTHER STYLISTS STARTING THEIR CAREERS?
Don’t doubt yourself! That dream in your heart is there for a reason! It took me years to realize that those other stylists’ whose careers I admired were not just lucky — they simply believed in themselves and put it in the work to make it happen. If they can do it, you can, too.
CAN YOU TELL US WHY YOU CHOOSE TO USE HAND-TIED EXTENSIONS AND WHY YOU USE HARPER ELLIS HAIR?
Over the years I have tried what feels like every hair extension method as I have always loved being able to help make a clients’ hair dreams come true. But I am always looking into education for new ways to improve and how I can provide my clients with the very best. After doing research for awhile, I realized that Hand-tied Extensions were the best option I could offer my clients. So on a last minute leap of faith, I traveled out of state to get certified in my first hand-tied method. I never imaging just how much it would truly change my life.
Harper Ellis just so happened to be a part of that training, and I felt like I walked away with so much insight from just my short visit there. I knew that after meeting the owner and realizing that she shared my love for bringing her clients the high quality that they deserved and inspiring other stylist to do the same that this was a company I wanted to support and stay connected to.
YOU ATTENDED OUR FALL 2020 MASTERCLASS! CAN YOU TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THAT EXPERIENCE AND HOW IT IMPACTED YOUR BUSINESS?
Masterclass was a game changer! It was another pivotal point in my career for sure. I originally attended to take my extensions skills to the next level and increase my knowledge in the business side of things, but I found so much more. To be a part of a weekend full of empowering leaders who truly care about showing you your worth and pouring into you with all of the knowledge they can all while sharing the room and connecting with so many inspiring like-minded stylists who share your desire to elevate our industry. It was a roller coaster of excitement and emotions. It felt like boss babe church camp, and my business has doubled since attending!
TELL US SOMETHING YOU’RE REALLY LOOKING FORWARD TO THIS FALL!
Honestly, what is there not to look forward to in the fall? The cooler weather, upcoming holidays and time with family — it’s one of my absolute favorite times of the year. But what I am really looking forward to the most is the moment my family and I have been waiting years for. After searching for several years, we finally purchased property in our dream location 2 years ago and my husband has been working endlessly on it ever since. It should be ready any day now, and I can’t wait to settle our family into the place we have been dying to call home.
